Maldivian manta rays

Experience Overview

Located in the Indian Ocean and made up of more than 1,000 coral islands, the Maldives is one of the best places in the world to combine diving and relaxation.

During this trip aboard the Carpe Vita Explorer, you will visit the best dive spots, discovering beautiful reefs and tropical fish.

In addition, you can join in an important research project on manta rays. The goal is to take photos of manta rays while diving or snorkelling with them. The images obtained will be sent to MantaMatcher, an international database that everyone can contribute to by providing manta ray pictures and information about manta ray sightings. This data is very useful to researchers, because they can identify individual specimens through the photos, creating a database of the worldwide manta ray population and discovering where and when these animals migrate.

Furthermore, instructors on the liveaboard will give you the chance to complete the Manta Diver specialty course, which is recognized by PADI. For those not joining the course, the instructors will provide information about identifying mantas and assisting in the research, which is supported by the IUCN.

You can help in the research as much or as little as you want. And you don’t have to be an expert in marine biology to participate.

Diviac Eco Travel has selected this trip in order to concretely help the manta ray population of the Maldives.

Keep in mind that this trip is scheduled in order to spot manta rays, but they are wild animals in their natural habitat. For this reason, we cannot guarantee sightings.
