Recently features in our list of the world’s best budget-friendly liveaboards, The Junk visits Thailand’s best dive sites in style.
Built in 1962, The Junk was originally a cargo-moving ship, designed to carry up to 60 tons. But in 1998, the boat was completely renovated and refitted as a dive boat. Today, it is a unique piece of cultural heritage still sailing the Asian seas.
The Junk can accommodate up to 18 divers in both private and shared cabins, but ensuite bathrooms and air-conditioned offer uncommon perks at this price point. Furthermore, the incredibly experienced dive crews make this underwater adventure more full-service than budget.
Because Thailand is a great place to learn new scuba skills, The Junk also offers Advanced Open Water and Nitrox courses.
From lengthy Similan Islands itineraries to short one-night hops to Phi Phi, The Junk offers something for every ability or time schedule. Book today for your best Thailand adventure to date!
Thailand’s Similan Islands
The Similan’s are undoubtedly famous in diving circles. They offer the best of Thailand’s diving all neatly parceled up around the nine islands. You can dive in magnificent, clear waters and spot manta rays and whale sharks.
The best way to dive in The Similan Islands is from a liveaboard boat. The majority of trips leave from Khao Lak, but there are departures from Ranong and Phuket too. The recommended length is a four-day, four-night trip, but there are shorter options available.
The diving is rich and plentiful with larger pelagics being regularly seen between February and April. Current does exist and while novice divers are welcome, most operators would like to see an advanced certification or require that you book to take the course aboard. Sites vary from towering boulders in city-like-scapes to soft coral reefs pulsating with life. The visibility is usually excellent and the abundance and variety of marine life is hard to overstate.
